My Favorite Spiritual Reads for Christian Mothers

Thus the aid of spiritual books is for you a necessity.
— Counsels of Perfection

As a mother it is so hard to find time for reading for my own pleasure. Since the time to read comes scarce to me, when I do read, I prefer to read books that are encouraging to my soul, parenting and faith journey. There are so many good books out there for Christian and Catholic mothers, so many. I have bookshelves full of books that I have either read or intend to read. And quite honestly, it takes me awhile to read a book due to the demands of motherhood. I’m also so guilty of reading many books at once so my time gets a little divided (and my brain gets a little crazy).

While my wish list and bookshelves hold many more books, today I am sharing some of the beloved favorites of mine. Some of these books are Catholic specific, however most can be applied to anyone as the Catholicism is lightly woven throughout it but the message is the same for us all.

I hope you enjoy these recommendations friends! I would love for you to drop a comment below of some of your favorites for me.

  1. Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers: This book is incredible! I will say that the old language is a bit hard to get through but it is filled with such truthful information. There is NO fluff to this book and it’s very blunt and to the point. It’s somewhat the kick in the butt that we all need to remain active in our faith.

  2. The Art of Catholic Mothering: This book was not what I expected it to be. It’s 12 short stories that give you a glimpse into the lives of other Catholic families, many overcoming some hardships that we may still experience in today’s times. The book was lovely and the stories are very relatable. I loved seeing how many families are holding onto the true Catholic church and not conforming to the world.

  3. A Mother’s Rule of Life: This book has been a joy! Although I’ve yet to sit down and really create my own “rule” as this book suggests, I do find this to be the most practical book to use to help organize your life, homeschooling, schedules and mothering to avoid that feeling of overwhelm and defeat. The book has a lot to relate to but also gives practical tips and outlines. I love that she even gives you great schedules to mimic; she gives you her whole life schedule in this book. Also, while it does have a strong Catholic focus, this book can be loved by any (also great for homeschool moms)!

  4. Becoming the Woman God Wants me to Be: This book is a 90 day guide to understanding the proverbs 31 woman and it may just so happen to be one of my favorite “study” stye books that I have done. This book isn’t a typical study style and has lots of reflection with light journaling. You can go however deep you want! I’ll probably do this book again soon because it was so good when I did it years ago!

  5. Ultimate Makeover, Mom Set Free and Busy Lives and Restless Souls: All of these books tend to head into the same direction. However they are all uniquely beautiful, encouraging and uplifting. I really enjoyed Busy Lives and Ultimate Makeover was a quick and easy read (I love quick reads). Mom Set Free has a whole workbook to go along with it that can be done as a group bible study or alone on your own. I recommend this book as a group study if you’re looking for something new.

  6. Raising Them Up: This book is a great parenting book! It’s a way to feel like you are not alone in this Christian parenting journey as the author resonated with me so many times; I could relate to him so much. This book is a great gift to any Christian parent who may need a little kick in the butt on their journey raising Saints.

Up next on my list: The Apostolate of Holy Motherhood, You Are Enough, Life is Messy and much more…stay tuned!
