Catholic Homeschool Resources

Someone recently asked me to provide them with some curriculums that were Christian focused as they began to navigate their homeschool journey and I thought that this would make for a wonderful blog post. Today I am going to share some of the wonderful Christian companies out there that provide some amazing curriculums.

Prior to the pandemic, research showed that over 70% of homeschooling families chose to homeschool for religious reasons. With such a high number of homeschooling families choosing to homeschool for faith based reasons, it only makes sense that there would be so many wonderful companies out there providing you with Christian resources.

We are a classical, Catholic homeschooling family where our curriculum is made up of mostly Catholic materials and/or classical based curriculums. Majority of the program and curriculums listed below follow the classical style methods. Since there are so many Catholic resources, this blog post will be broken down into two parts: Catholic Homeschool Resources and a follow up post, Christian Homeschool Resources.

Catholic Based Curriculums and Resources:

  • Designing Your Own Classical Curriculum. A helpful guide to Catholic homeschooling parents.

  • Catholic All Year. A guide to living liturgically.

  • Little Angel Reader Series from Stone Tablet Press. Our first grader uses this phonics program and I adore it! It has been the best fit for her as I find that the worksheets and level readers are truly appropriate for a beginner reader and will of course increase in difficulty as she improves. This program ties in Catholicism by incorporating short stories on the mass, guardian angels, using phonics photos of the eucharist and so on. We adore this series and I am seeing the success my daughter is having with it.

  • Our Father’s House. Homeschool curriculum and resources for Catholic families. Some of the things listed on their website are also just recommendations of good curriculums for Catholic families, such as Saxon Math. We have used Sound Beginnings for second grade phonics from this company and it was a solid curriculum, just perhaps not my favorite.

  • Mater Amabilis. Prek-12. A FREE Charlotte Mason style curriculum for Catholics.

  • Catholic Heritage Curricula . Prek-8th. This is strictly a curriculum provider with no enrollment.

  • The Harp and Laurel Wreath. This is a wonderful book of classical poetry and verses to help students study memorization and classical poetry. Our children work on a poem every few weeks and memorize it, copy it and illustrate it.

  • Picture Book of Saints // Saints Lives and Illuminations // Our Island Saints

  • Seton Home Study. See more below, but you can purchase curriculum here too!

  • Mother of Divine Grace. See more below, but you can purchase their curriculum too!

  • Catholic Schoolhouse. See more below, but you can purchase their curriculum too!

  • Shining Light Dolls. Frequently has free downloads to print, puzzles in their shop and much more that focuses on the lives of the Saints.

  • Catholic Icing. Catholic craft ides to do with your children.

Catholic Based Homeschooling Hybrids/CoOps

  • Regina Caeli Academy. (Accredited). This is the wonderful program that we use for homeschooling. This is a university style hybrid that is strictly classical, Catholic and allows our children to attend “school” two days per week with other kids in the program. RCA provides us with our lesson plans, has wonderful faith formation and is fully accredited. They even keep transcripts for families in the event that you would need it. There is a tuition fee for this program as well as uniforms on the two days at center, but parents are the “tutors” at center and this allows parents to still be with their children throughout the day. Or you can access the drop off only option! RCA also has some curriculum for purchase on their website as well if you’d like to check it out. We love their history curriculums that incorporate the lives of the saints. I can’t say enough good things about this program. If you are hesitant to homeschool because you still want your children to have a school setting at times, check and see if there’s a RCA center near you! Go to their website and check their locations out. We have families that drive over an hour away to join us twice per week!

  • Catholic Schoolhouse. Prek-12. This would be the Catholic version of Classical Conversations where students can come together in their community and use their materials but will have to supplement for other subjects that Catholic Schoolhouse does not produce.

  • St. John Bosco. A Catholic homeschool co op that may be in your community. There is a co op for the Baton Rouge/Gonzales area.

  • Holy Family Homeschoolers. A group for the Baton Rouge/Gonzales area that provides homeschool families with extracurricular events, sports, proms, field trips and more. You can join for a very low fee for the year and have access to their events.

Catholic Based Curriculums With Enrollment Options to Assist You at Home (many allow you to purchase just the curriculum without enrolling in the program)

  • Seton Home Study School. (Accredited) Prek-12. This is a wonderful program that is a home study option where you can pay a low enrollment option to have your Catholic lesson plans provided with you and all of your curriculum picked from one place. By enrolling in the program for a low fee, you have access to support, accreditation and more. You can also purchase their materials without enrolling in the program.

  • St. Thomas Aquinas. “From Pre-1st to Grade 12 the St. Thomas Aquinas Academy classical home school curriculum is designed as one graceful whole, with a unit study flavor, that easily adapts to many grade levels learning at the same kitchen table. We encourage a relaxed teaching style, tuned to the natural developmental phases of the child's intellect. We help you teach your child to learn, resulting in a competent, confident child with a life-long enthusiasm for learning, ready for college, work, or family life – whatever his or her calling may be.” Strictly all by book, no online option.

  • Mother of Divine Grace. (Accredited) Prek-12. Mother of Divine is a wonderful program where you can sign up for assisted homeschooling with them or just purchase their curriculum as needed. Last year we used some of their books for our children. Strictly all by book, no online option.

  • Angelicum Academy. (Accredited) Prek-12. Enrollment options with online classes as well.

  • Our Lady of the Rosary School. Prek-12. Complete curriculum for grades preschool through twelve.

  • Queen of Heaven Academy. (Accredited) 4th Grade-12. Curriculum with an enrollment option and online classes.

  • Homeschool Connection. Online classes for Catholic homeschooling that also offers dual enrollment courses through Franciscan University.

  • Bellarime Studies. Online high school courses that focus on history, latin and apologetics.

  • Kolbe Academy. Prek-12. Another wonderful classical, Catholic program that allows you to enroll for special services to assist with your homeschooling.

Something that you will notice from above is that many of these wonderful programs are accredited. This means that these programs have to meet specific standards to show rigorous academics, good business practices, etc… There is an outside agency that evaluates if a program is worthy of being accredited and being accredited means that you have transferable credits and may be easily recognized by colleges. While it is not necessary to use an accredited program, it has many wonderful advantages!

I hope you found this post helpful to help guide you to some of our favorite books and some of the wonderful options that exist. If you are new to homeschooling make sure to browse our homeschool section and check out my post, “How to Begin Homeschooling.” This post will continue to be updated as new resources are discovered. To find some of our favorite curriculums that we supplement with that may not specifically be Catholic based, look for my part two of this post soon!
