A Look at a Catholic 8th Grade Curriculum

Here you will find all the resources and tools we are using for our 8th grader’s Catholic based homeschooling this coming year. I’ll update the post as more books continue to make their way in and as we make tweaks to our plan for this year.

First and foremost, the spine of what our family does for homeschooling comes from our co-op that we are a part of, Catholic Schoolhouse. This spine lays out our focus in history, science, religion, Latin, timeline, art, music and geography. At my eighth grader’s level, dialectic, the program requires work in writing, literature, seminar and more. Because of this, some of our books are prechosen for us and then from there we add on to complete her focus.

Let’s cut straight to the chase here…

We are currently using PreAlgebra and a high school level science course from The Good and the Beautiful. Since we are studying American History, we also threw in a biography on Abraham Lincoln with a comprehension guide too. You can shop my link here to grab your own math and ELA or books to read from TGTB. We love that these courses have videos to help with teaching, answer keys, and more. We use TGTB for a lot of various courses here and especially with little learners. While we do stick to a lot of Catholic based curriculum, I have been pleased with TGTB so far.

Our history, reading comprehension (which doubles as a Catechism book), and geography workbook (we have a level to match our co-op) all comes from Seton.

For Catechism we will be doing some easy reads on Catholic doctrine from TAN Books with this set here. And we are doing a course on Catholic Apologetics with this book and this workbook.

From there our grammar and writing focus will be IEW and Fix It Grammar all from IEW.

Lastly, some other reads that we will tackle this year for seminar within our co-op, we are doing The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and A Philadelphia Catholic in King James Court.

Lastly, we use all notebooks from Schoolnest and love the quality and design of them.

The last kink we are squaring away is if we plan to squeeze in more Latin curriculum this year, but for now, here’s a great look at what we are doing. And I can’t believe it is all here already!
