Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross

This year we celebrated the Feast of the Cross, or Happy Roodmas, as some would say. This was a fun activity to do with the kids and I wanted to get it on the blog for next year during this time. The feast of the cross is to honor and celebrate the cross as an instrument of salvation. We get to celebrate all that it is and what it stands for. We learned all about St. Helen (Helena), who discovered the cross and just how miraculous the cross was.

An excellent way to learn and celebrate this day was with our saints books, All About the Saints and Saints Lives and Illuminations. We made a craft with paper plates, broken popsicle sticks and paint. Have older children write a simple report or short story on St. Helen and the discovery of the cross after they have read about her for added fun.

This is a wonderful way to teach children about the true cross and the discovery made so long ago. St. Helen went on a mission to Jerusalem to find the cross that Jesus was crucified on and eventually found three crosses. In order to discover which cross was in fact the cross of Jesus Christ, she took a piece of each cross to a dying woman. Once St. Helen saw which cross healed, she knew she had in fact found the cross of Jesus Christ! What a miracle!

Celebrate the discovery of this cross so your children can always remember the brave mission that St. Helen went on and our thankfulness to her. But most of all, celebrate this day with your children so they are reminded of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us.
